Museumsquartier

Museumsquartier

The Museumsquartier is among the ten world’s largest cultural complexes. It is famous for uniting Baroque and contemporary architecture, and various art disciplines and recreational facilities covering 60,000 square meters (645,834 square feet) large area. The Museumsquartier is located in the heart of Vienna close to other major sights and landmarks.

The Museumsquartier was built on the site of the former imperial stables. The construction started in 1998 and the Museumsquartier was officially opened in two phases in 2001. It houses various cultural complexes displaying art works from the 19th to the 20th century. If the city centre of Vienna appears as an open air museum, the Museumsquartier shows it as a modern and dynamic city as well.

Museums and cultural institution in the Museumsquartier function independently but combined tickets are available at a lower price. Among the most popular sites in the Museumsquartier are the MUMOK (Museum of Modern Art) housing a collection of modern and contemporary art works of some of the best artists such as Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Joseph Beuys and many others, and the Leopold Museum displaying the largest collection of modern Austrian art.
